Dan McCafferty Dies: Nazareth Co-Founder Who Sang Lead On ‘Love Hurts‘ Was 76

1 min read

Dan McCafferty, lead singer of Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, has died aged 76.

Longtime Nazarethe Pete Agnew post the news on the group’s Facebook account. “Dan passed away at 12:40 today,” she wrote. “This is the saddest announcement I have ever made. Maryann and her family lost a wonderful husband and father, I lost my best friend, one of the greatest singers that ever lived. He is too angry to say anything else at this time.”

Dan McCafferty was born in Dunfermline

Dan McCafferty was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1946. It was there that he and Agnew founded Nazareth in 1968 with guitarist Manny Charlton and drummer Darrell Sweet. The group’s self-titled debut album, released in 1971, did not chart, as did its successor, the 1972 event. Nazareth’s first success came with 1973’s Razamanaz, which reached No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart and went on to dominate the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 157.
