WWDC 2025: macOS 26 Introduces Major Spotlight Enhancements, a Modern Design, and More
Apple has introduced macOS 26, now officially known as macOS Tahoe, heralding the most significant update to Spotlight yet, along with a comprehensive redesign and enhanced AI integration throughout the platform.

This update, unveiled at WWDC 2025, refines nearly every element of the Mac experience—from the way users search and engage with files to how their Macs sync with iPhones.

Spotlight: Elevating Beyond Search
Spotlight, Apple’s integrated search tool, receives its most substantial upgrade to date. Users can now execute a multitude of actions directly from the Spotlight bar, such as sending emails, creating notes, or launching app-specific shortcuts—all without needing to switch windows. The feature supports quick keys, intelligent result ranking, and browsing options that allow users to scroll through recent apps, documents, or clipboard history.

Third-party developers can integrate their applications into Spotlight using the App Intents API, transforming it into a more comprehensive command center. Spotlight also adapts to user behavior, offering personalized suggestions based on recent activities.

‘Liquid Glass’ Aesthetic Introduced

In tandem with iOS 26, the translucent “Liquid Glass” design will be featured in macOS Tahoe. This update sees Apple reimagining components like the Dock, menu bar, and toolbars to create a cleaner and more engaging look.

The update introduces dynamic personalization options, including custom app icons, folder colors, emojis, and layouts for the Control Center.

Enhanced iPhone Continuity

For the first time, the complete Phone app is accessible on Mac, enabling users to receive cellular calls via Continuity. Features such as Call Screening and Hold Assist—initially introduced on the iPhone—are now supported, allowing users to filter unknown callers and remain on hold seamlessly.

Live Activities from a nearby iPhone will also appear in the Mac’s menu bar, offering real-time updates like flight information, food deliveries, or live sports scores, all synchronized through iPhone Mirroring.

Updates to Apple Intelligence

macOS Tahoe furthers Apple’s commitment to device-centric AI with Apple Intelligence. This includes live translation features in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls, all handled locally to ensure user privacy. Smart Shortcuts utilize Apple’s language models, enriching users’ abilities to analyze documents, generate summaries, and compare notes using audio transcriptions.

In addition to these standout features, macOS Tahoe updates Safari with a new floating tab interface, an enhanced sidebar, and performance upgrades that Apple claims make it up to 50% faster than Chrome. The Messages app introduces new backgrounds, typing indicators in group chats, and a more user-friendly layout.

Apple’s journaling app, Journal, is now accessible on Mac, featuring multi-journal support and map views. The Photos app has received a visual revamp, complete with improved organizational tools that align with iPadOS design.

Availability and Compatibility

The macOS Tahoe developer beta is currently available for download through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta expected to launch in July 2025 via the Apple Beta Software Program. The fully official release is set to arrive this fall as a free update for compatible Macs.

While Apple has yet to publish a definitive list of supported devices, it is anticipated to function on Macs released from 2018 onwards, in line with previous macOS support policies.
