While losing wickets can complicate such chases, we successfully kept up with the required run rate: Martin Guptill.
A remarkable innings from Martin Guptill, scoring 68 runs off just 28 balls, propelled the Pune Panthers to a four-wicket triumph over the Gurugram Thunders on the second day of the World Legends Pro T20 League in Goa on Tuesday.

Both teams were eager to establish dominance early in the tournament, and Gurugram Thunders won the toss, opting to bat first. They set a challenging target of 159 for 5, anchored by an impressive performance from Ross Taylor. Despite facing early challenges, the Thunders maintained a steady flow of runs, effectively handling pressure during the middle overs.

Dwayne Bravo then made a significant impact with two quick wickets, briefly stalling the scoring rate. However, Taylor anchored the innings with a composed and impactful knock, receiving solid support from Colin de Grandhomme. Together, they forged a vital partnership that stabilized the innings and helped Gurugram post a respectable score.
In response, the Pune Panthers lost Shane Watson early on, but Martin Guptill stepped up, anchoring a crucial 72-run partnership to regain momentum. Reflecting on the chase, Guptill remarked, “It was good to set the tone early. Chases like that can get tricky if you lose wickets, but we managed to stay ahead of the run rate, and from there it was pretty straightforward. It was great fun playing against familiar faces and enjoying a bit of banter out in the middle. Today’s done now, though we take the confidence, reset, and go again tomorrow.”

The Panthers experienced a few hiccups in the middle overs, which slightly delayed the chase, but Afghan all-rounder Sayed Shirzad Shinwari made a significant impact with both bat and ball. Earlier, upon being asked to bowl first, he took two key wickets by dismissing both Gurugram openers. Later, he contributed effectively in the chase with a brisk 21 off 10 balls.

Guptill was the driving force throughout the pursuit, his explosive 68 off 28 balls keeping the required run rate firmly in control. His aggressive batting ensured the Panthers crossed the finish line with four wickets in hand, marking a strong start to their campaign.
