India aims to become the leading chip producer by 2035, with four companies set to commence production in 2026, according to Vaishnaw.
Demand for its GPUs remains high worldwide, fueling advancements in artificial intelligence technologies.
“I met with the NVIDIA team to talk about the development of sovereign GPUs and the manufacturing of edge devices like DGX Spark in Bharat. This device provides up to 1 petaFLOP performance with secure inferencing for models having up to 200 billion parameters. It is a compact GPU that functions without the Internet, making it ideal for railways, shipping, healthcare, education, and remote applications,” Vaishnaw shared on the social media platform X.
The minister also posted a photo of his meeting with Nvidia’s managing director for South Asia, Vishal Dhupar, on X.
This week, at the CES trade show, Nvidia showcased how the DGX Spark and DGX Station deskside AI supercomputers enable developers to leverage the latest open and frontier AI models locally, ranging from 100-billion-parameter models on DGX Spark to 1-trillion-parameter models on DGX Station.
Earlier in the year, Vaishnaw indicated that India would establish its own Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) by the first half of 2025, within the next 3 to 4 years.
The government is proactively supporting GPU procurement and subsidizing their availability for AI technology developers across the country.
Having set an initial goal of 10,000 GPUs, India has successfully deployed 38,000 GPUs under the India AI Mission, with all GPUs available at a subsidized rate of ₹65 per hour.
