Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat indicates that India's tourism industry is expected to expand at a 20% annual growth rate.
India’s tourism sector is on track for impressive growth, with annual increases anticipated to surpass 20%, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated on November 28. He made these remarks to reporters during FICCI’s 98th Annual General Meeting in New Delhi.

Shekhawat credited the optimistic forecast to the country’s robust economy, rising disposable incomes, a burgeoning middle class, and significant infrastructure enhancements during a panel discussion at the FICCI AGM 2025, moderated by CNBC-TV18’s Shereen Bhan. “I am confident that tourism in India will grow by more than 20% CAGR annually,” he remarked, adding that initiatives such as the exemption of income tax for incomes up to ₹12 lakh have bolstered travel demand. “With the expanding economy, the Indian middle class has grown, which has positively impacted the tourism sector. The tax exemption of up to 12 lakh for individuals has supported tourism,” he explained.

The Minister praised Ahmedabad for winning the bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, asserting that the event would boost the state’s appeal in the global tourism arena and create lasting momentum.
“I believe that this major event will further elevate India’s tourism potential until 2030 and beyond. It will create a multiplier effect. In tourism, individual initiatives are not standalone; government actions ultimately ‘benefit the public, stimulate the economy, and increase disposable income, which collectively serve as a catalyst for our tourism sector,” the Minister stated.

“Infrastructure status has been granted to 50 destinations… Essentially, infrastructure status has been issued nationwide,” he noted. Earlier, while addressing the industry, he emphasized the need for substantial private investment to drive the upcoming phase of growth.

“India requires bold private investment to rethink hospitality models, create innovative experiential tourism offerings, establish service excellence that meets global standards, and forge strong community ties. The government has established a conducive environment; now it is the industry’s turn to lead, shape, and elevate India’s tourism brand on the global stage,” the Minister added.
