Trump’s comments during a White House press conference marked a significant escalation in the administration’s critique of the press. The president has privately expressed frustration to aides in recent weeks over what he perceives as overly negative media coverage of the US-Israeli operations against Iran, with Trump and his allies openly reprimanding certain news organizations.
Following the downing of a US fighter jet over Iran on Friday, multiple media sources revealed that one of the two airmen aboard had been rescued by US forces.
Trump claimed that the leak jeopardized the safety of the ongoing rescue operation for the second airman, though that airman was ultimately also rescued.

“We didn’t discuss the first one for an hour. Then someone leaked information, and we are determined to find that leaker. We’re making a vigorous effort to identify that individual,” Trump remarked.
“We’re going to approach the media organization that published it and insist, ‘National security is at stake; disclose your source or face jail time.’
It remains unclear which media outlet or journalist Trump was targeting, as several organizations, including The New York Times, CBS News, and Axios, reported on the first airman’s rescue in quick succession.
The White House did not promptly reply to inquiries about which reporter was being threatened by Trump.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr noted on X last month that broadcasters disseminating “fake news” now have the opportunity to “correct their course” before license renewals.
His comments were accompanied by a screenshot of a Truth Social post from Trump earlier that day, asserting that “Lowlife ‘Papers’ and Media want us to lose the War.”
