A suicide bomber in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno killed at least 10 individuals and injured several others during an explosion at a restaurant, police reported on Saturday. The incident took place in the Konduga area late Friday, as stated by police spokesperson Nahum Daso to The Associated Press.
No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack; however, the northeast of Nigeria has faced assaults from Islamic militants associated with Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province.
Boko Haram, a homegrown jihadist group in Nigeria, began its insurgency in 2009, aiming to combat Western education and enforce their extreme interpretation of Islamic law. This conflict has also affected neighboring countries in northern Nigeria.
According to the U.N., around 35,000 civilians have lost their lives, and over 2 million have been displaced in the northeastern region.
Despite assurances from President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tackle Nigeria’s security issues, the violence continues unabated.
