Shikara Rally Takes Place on Dal Lake to Boost Confidence in Jammu and Kashmir’s Tourism Industry

Jammu and Kashmir Organizes Shikara Race on Dal Lake to Boost Valley Tourism
In an effort to enhance public trust in Kashmir’s tourism industry, the Apni Party organized a shikara rally on Wednesday at the famous Dal Lake, conveying that the Valley is safe for visitors and eager to welcome tourists from all over the nation. Party president Altaf Bukhari, who inaugurated the rally, stated that the initiative aimed to alleviate concerns and show support for those whose livelihoods are affected by tourism.

“This rally has been arranged to communicate to everyone in the country that Kashmir is waiting for you and is secure. Come visit Kashmir… your safety is our priority. Kashmir is as safe as any region in the country,” Bukhari informed reporters.

He underscored the importance of backing essential stakeholders in the tourism sector, including shikarawalas, houseboat operators, hotel personnel, and transport service providers, many of whom are facing a significant downturn in business.

“Whether it’s houseboat operators, hoteliers, or taxi and tempo drivers, they are under significant pressure, but we stand with them,” he remarked, urging immediate action from the government.

“There is a necessity for support… they require assistance, and that help should be extended to them,” Bukhari added.

The rally took place following the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including 25 tourists and a local service provider. This incident drastically affected the tourism business, leading to cancellations and a drop in visitors across major sites in the Valley.

Leaders from the Apni Party indicated that the event was not only designed to reassure prospective tourists but also to call for greater institutional backing for the tourism-dependent community still recovering from the aftermath of the attack.

One day prior, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with a delegation from the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) and recognized their efforts in promoting the region as a top tourist destination.

“We sincerely appreciate the IATO for visiting and coordinating this trip, as trust is a two-way street. Your presence reassures us that we are on the correct path,” Abdullah conveyed to the IATO members.

In reference to the tragic occurrence earlier this year, the chief minister remarked, “To label it unfortunate would be an understatement. It not only impacted 26 families directly but also shook the confidence of many more. Just when the season seemed promising, the downturn by mid-June was quite apparent.” A terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 resulted in the death of 26 individuals, mainly tourists.

Highlighting the resilience of the tourism sector, Omar Abdullah expressed hope for its recovery.

“Since the 2022 season, we’ve observed an increase in tourist vehicles. It has been uplifting to see Srinagar filled with life, with taxis carrying luggage on rooftops heading to Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and beyond.” He emphasized that the aim is not merely to have tourists visit Kashmir once.
