The leaders convened during the G7 Summit on Tuesday (June 17) and shared perspectives on regional and global developments. Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to Chancellor Merz for Germany’s strong expression of solidarity with India and its support for actions against terrorism.
“The leaders concurred that terrorism presents a significant threat to global peace and stability,” stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
In a statement on X, Modi highlighted discussions with Chancellor Merz aimed at bolstering defence and security ties. “We will continue to collaborate in areas such as counter-terrorism and combating terror financing,” he remarked.

“I was pleased to engage in discussions with Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the G7 Summit in Canada. India and Germany share a strong friendship founded on mutual values. This year, we celebrate 25 years of our Strategic Partnership,” Modi stated.
He also mentioned that both sides explored closer collaboration in areas including IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainability, research, and innovation. This marked the first meeting between the leaders since Chancellor Merz took office in May 2025.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated the Chancellor on his electoral victory and his new role. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the German government’s condolences regarding the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad the previous week, according to the MEA.
“The leaders expressed satisfaction at the ongoing momentum in the bilateral relationship and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance cooperation in crucial areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development partnership, green energy, technology, innovation, education, and mobility,” it noted.

Both parties agreed to deepen and diversify the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, celebrating the milestone of 25 years, it concluded.
“Celebrating 25 years of steadfast Strategic Partnership. PM Narendra Modi engaged with Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
“Both leaders deliberated on methods to enhance India-Germany bilateral cooperation in vital sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development partnership, green energy, technology, innovation, education, and mobility,” he added.
This marks Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade.
