Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal set to travel to Canada in May for discussions on trade.
Patent application filings have surged by 30.2% to 1,43,729 in 2025-26, up from 1,10,375 in the prior fiscal year, due to various initiatives launched by the government to enhance the intellectual property rights framework, stated Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday.

India ranks as the 6th largest patent filer globally.

“Our patent filings reached an unprecedented 1.43 lakh+ in FY 2025-26, reflecting a 30.2% rise compared to last year. With over 69% of patents filed domestically, spearheaded by innovators from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, we are demonstrating to the world that Made in India is driven by Invented in India,” Goyal mentioned in a social media update.
Filings have been on a steady upward trend since 2016-17, when the total was 45,444. This figure rose to 47,894 in 2017-18, 50,660 in 2018-19, 56,268 in 2019-20, 58,503 in 2020-21, 66,440 in 2021-22, 82,208 in 2022-23, and 92,163 in 2023-24.

The government has implemented numerous measures to bolster the patent ecosystem in the country, especially for startups, MSMEs, and educational institutions.

These initiatives include fee reductions for startups, small enterprises, and educational institutions; expedited examination of patent applications; and pro bono assistance for Indian startups in filing and processing patent, trademark, and design applications.

Patent applications are granted only after a thorough examination to ensure compliance with the criteria of novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability as outlined in the Patents Act, 1970.

The examination process uses a two-tier system, where applications are first examined and then reviewed by the controller.
