The physical product is being created in partnership with Jony Ive, the renowned former design chief of Apple.
At an event on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Lehane provided a rare insight into the company’s ambitious hardware plans, indicating that the much-anticipated device is expected to be revealed within that timeframe.
“We are aiming for something in the latter part [of 2026],” Lehane stated to Axios, noting that while this is the most likely timeline, “we will see how things unfold.”
Lehane has kept details about the product’s design under wraps, describing it as a significant upcoming attraction, while mentioning that he would have news to disclose “much later in the year.” Although he did not specify that the device would be available for purchase this year, he reiterated that
OpenAI was “looking at something in the latter part [of 2026].”
Reports indicate that the American artificial intelligence research organization is developing prototypes of small, screenless devices that may be worn and facilitate user interaction.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is confident that the device will surpass the iPhone, expressing concerns about the distractions posed by modern technologies.
At the Emerson Collective last year, he remarked, “When I interact with current devices or most applications, it feels like I’m navigating Times Square in New York, constantly dealing with all the small inconveniences — bright lights flashing in my face…people bumping into me, noise going off, creating an unsettling environment.”
“I don’t believe it brings any peace or calm into our lives, allowing us to focus on what truly matters,” he continued.
He noted that the AI device would be akin to “sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake in the mountains, simply enjoying the serenity,” as reported by TechCrunch.
