Nicholas Pooran unexpectedly retires from international cricket at the age of 29.
Dominican cricket star Nicholas Pooran made a surprising announcement on Tuesday, declaring his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. He emphasized that the decision followed “much thought and reflection,” though he did not provide specific reasons for his choice.

This news came just days after he withdrew from selection for the T20I series against England.

The dynamic left-handed batsman concluded his international career as the West Indies’ most capped T20I player, participating in 106 matches and becoming the leading run-scorer with 2275 runs at an average of 26.14 and a strike rate of 136.39. In 61 ODI matches, he amassed 1983 runs at an average of 39.66 and strike rate of 99.15.
“After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket,” Pooran, who previously served as the West Indies white-ball captain, shared on his social media accounts.

“This game we cherish has provided, and will continue to provide, immense joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and the opportunity to represent the people of the West Indies,” said the Trinidadian, who debuted internationally in 2016 during a T20 International match.

He has never participated in Test cricket for his nation.

“Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving my all each time I stepped onto the field… it’s hard to express how much that truly means to me. Leading the team as captain has been a privilege I will always treasure,” he remarked.

Pooran had recently opted out of selection for the T20I series against England after completing the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

He has not played in ODIs since the West Indies’ exit from the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers. His final match for the West Indies was against Bangladesh in Kingstown in December 2024.

“To the fans – thank you for your unwavering support. You lifted me during tough times and celebrated joyous moments with unmatched enthusiasm. To my family, friends, and teammates – thank you for being part of this journey. Your support and belief sustained me through it all,” he expressed.

“Though this chapter of my international career has closed, my passion for West Indies Cricket will remain unwavering. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and resilience for the future.” Known for his extensive franchise participation, Pooran is anticipated to play in Major League Cricket (MLC) and The Hundred this summer. In addition to the Caribbean Premier League and IPL, he regularly competes in the ILT20 in the UAE.

He enjoyed an impressive 2024 season, achieving a record for the most sixes in a year (170) and concluding IPL 2025 with 524 runs at a strike rate of 196.25, including five half-centuries.

Pooran was expected to play a pivotal role in West Indies’ strategy for the T20 World Cup scheduled for early next year, prior to Tuesday’s unexpected announcement.

Cricket West Indies commended Pooran for his significant contributions to Caribbean cricket.

“Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career,” the organization stated.

“A world-class player and a game changer, Nicholas leaves the game as the most capped West Indian… His on-field performances and influence within the team have left a lasting mark on West Indies cricket.

“We celebrate his achievements and thank him for the unforgettable moments he has provided to fans throughout the region and beyond. We wish him all the best in the next phase of his journey.”
