Netflix secures worldwide agreement to stream Sony Pictures' movies post-theatrical release.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment have finalized a new partnership that will enable films like “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” to be available to the streaming platform’s subscribers globally after their theatrical runs, as announced by the companies on Thursday, January 15.

According to the multi-year deal, Netflix will serve as the exclusive streaming platform for Sony Pictures’ films following their time in theaters and video-on-demand availability for the initial 18 months, after which the films will transition to Disney.

The implementation of this arrangement will begin gradually later this year as individual rights become available, with complete global access anticipated by early 2029.

Additional early titles from Sony Pictures that will be available on Netflix through this agreement include Nintendo’s live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda,” “The Nightingale,” featuring Dakota and Elle Fanning, and Sam Mendes’ four films centered around The Beatles, which won an Academy Award.

This agreement provides Netflix with a consistent influx of studio films for a global audience as it increasingly relies on licensed content. Currently, the company holds similar streaming rights to Sony Pictures’ films in select regions such as the U.S., Germany, and throughout Southeast Asia.

For Sony, this deal secures a platform for its upcoming theatrical releases at a time when studios are reevaluating long-term distribution strategies due to shifts in consumer viewing habits brought about by streaming.

This news arrives as Netflix works towards acquiring Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets in a massive $72 billion transaction.

Sony’s film library includes titles such as “Uncharted,” “Anyone But You,” “Venom: The Last Dance,” and “It Ends With Us.”

The companies have not revealed the financial specifics of the agreement.
