Mumbai Indians Aim for Strong Opening in IPL 2026 Against weakened KKR
A strong Mumbai Indians squad will kick off their quest to break a five-year title drought in the Indian Premier League as they face a struggling Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match this Sunday.

It has been some time since the Mumbai Indians, the joint most successful team in IPL history, last lifted the trophy, which they won five times from 2013 to 2020.

Last season, the Hardik Pandya-led team finished third after being defeated by runners-up Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. However, the Mumbai Indians are confident they have what it takes to chase a record-extending sixth title this year.
A refreshed Rohit Sharma is eager to return to form, and the all-round capability of the Mumbai Indians makes them a formidable contender once more. Their roster features a significant portion of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, including skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Pandya, Tilak Varma, and Jasprit Bumrah.

MI boasts a wealth of overseas talent, including another wicketkeeper-batter option in Ryan Rickelton, as well as Sherfane Rutherford, Corbin Bosch, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, Will Jacks, AM Ghazanfar, and even Trent Boult, who is expected to partner with Bumrah.

With Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, MI possesses two experienced Indian players, while Naman Dhir is likely to reprise his successful finishing role from last year.

The challenge lies not only in finding the right playing combination and effectively utilizing the Impact Player rule, but also in securing early victories to build momentum, as the Mumbai Indians have a reputation for being slow starters in the IPL.

Meanwhile, MI will be without two overseas signings, Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner, who have yet to join the squad.

“The guys who are joining late are Mitch and Jacksy. Both requested a bit more time for personal reasons and we were quite happy to accommodate that. They will join the team shortly,” said MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene on the eve of the match.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, bring some local flavor with skipper Ajinkya Rahane and young talent Angkrish Raghuvanshi to Mumbai, but they face several key questions even before the first ball is bowled.

The KKR leadership’s biggest challenge will be assembling a bowling attack that looks significantly different than they anticipated post-auction.

Mustafizur Rahman was released based on BCCI’s instructions, and two of KKR’s Indian bowlers, Akash Deep and Harshit Rana, are out due to injuries.

Blessing Muzarabani, known for his prowess in white-ball cricket, is expected to play a crucial role from the start, but much will depend on Varun Chakravarthy in their bowling lineup.

KKR also features former CSK players Rachin Ravindra, who should strengthen their batting order, and Matheesha Pathirana. Tim Seifert is the primary option for wicketkeeper-batter, along with two quality all-rounders, Cameron Green and Sunil Narine.
