Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband, Mark, were killed in a shooting early Saturday (June 14), which Governor Tim Walz described as a “politically motivated assassination,” according to CNN.
“our state has lost a significant leader, and I have lost my closest friend,” Walz stated during a press conference.
He also mentioned that Minnesota state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times but were still alive as of Saturday morning.
“We remain cautiously hopeful that they will survive this assassination attempt,” Walz said.
