On Saturday (January 3), IRB Sindhudurg Airport, managed by IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd, announced that it has obtained approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to operate flights around the clock, in all weather conditions, representing a major enhancement for the facility.
This authorization enables the airport to operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), permitting aircraft to function even in low visibility and poor weather. The approval also encompasses published satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures and includes a backup navigation aid.
These advancements collectively offer pilots precise instrument approach guidance while ensuring a dependable non-satellite alternative, thereby enhancing safety and operational reliability for all aircraft throughout the year.

This progress comes as passenger traffic at Sindhudurg Airport continues to rise. In December, the airport achieved nearly 11,000 passenger movements for the first time and is projected to rank among India’s top 75 airports based on monthly passenger numbers. To manage the increasing traffic, the airport has upgraded its aircraft parking facilities, increasing capacity from three to six aircraft stands.
This improved operational capability is anticipated to solidify Sindhudurg’s position as a key aviation hub for the Konkan region, enhancing tourism, business travel, and regional connectivity. Improved reliability for all-weather operations is also expected to bolster airline confidence and facilitate more reliable scheduling.
Captain Jai S Sadana, Chief Adviser and Head of IRB Sindhudurg Airport, remarked on the approval, stating, “The nod for 24×7 all-weather operations greatly boosts the airport’s reliability and operational capacity.
This will foster airline confidence, support ongoing traffic increases, and significantly contribute to the economic and tourism growth of the Konkan region. We are thankful for the guidance and support from regulators, authorities, and the government.”

He further mentioned that additional connectivity enhancements are forthcoming. “The Mumbai–Sindhudurg route, part of the state regional connectivity scheme, is also expected to launch in the upcoming months. This will further enhance connectivity, making travel more convenient for Konkan residents and welcoming visitors from across India,” he concluded.
