Raj Thackeray left the undivided Shiv Sena in 2005 due to disagreements with Uddhav Thackeray and subsequently established the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
This reunion signifies a pivotal moment in Maharashtra’s political arena, especially within Mumbai’s civic context.
A symbolic reunion on a unified platform
The two leaders appeared together alongside their families on stage, indicating a display of solidarity after years of separation.
Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut characterized the occasion as an “auspicious beginning,” according to News18.
“This marks an auspicious start to ensure the saffron flag continues to wave over the BMC and other municipal bodies. This can be achieved only by the Thackeray brothers,” Raut stated.
While addressing the audience, Uddhav Thackeray remarked that they were united “as Thackeray brothers.” Reflecting on the family’s legacy, he said, “Our grandfather Prabodhankar Thackeray spearheaded the fight for Maharashtra. When we secured Mumbai for Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena Pramukh founded the party. We will soon celebrate 60 years since the Shiv Sena’s formation.”
Marathi identity and a political agenda
The former chief minister of Maharashtra accused certain unnamed entities of trying to “undermine Mumbai.”
“Continuing to fight would insult Hutatma. No one can take Mumbai away from the Marathi Manus. The BJP once declared ‘Batenge toh Katenge’. Now, I urge the Marathi Manus—If they waver now, they will be divided,” Uddhav Thackeray asserted.
Next to speak, Raj Thackeray underscored the theme of reconciliation. “Maharashtra transcends any miscommunication or conflict,” he remarked, as reported by News18. “That’s the beginning of our collaboration. We are not here to discuss how many seats we will contest.”
He confirmed that the alliance would extend to Nashik and mentioned, “We will announce plans for other municipalities after today’s meeting,” affirming that “Mumbai’s mayor will be a Maharashtrian, and it will be from our party.”
Electoral consequences throughout Maharashtra
This alliance comes after weeks of discussions regarding seat-sharing for elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra.
From a political standpoint, the alliance could unify Marathi-speaking voters in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, and the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where split votes have historically aided opposing parties, as noted by News18.
While Shiv Sena (UBT) maintains organizational strength, particularly in Mumbai and Konkan, the MNS contributes grassroots influence and emotional resonance among urban Marathi youth.
Ultimately, the reunion of the Thackeray cousins may alter civic competitions, confront rival Sena factions, and render Maharashtra’s municipal elections more competitive and unpredictable.
