This holiday encompasses 29 municipal corporations, including both Mumbai City and the Mumbai Suburban districts governed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
It is important to note that this holiday was not included in the 24 public holidays for 2026 that the state government announced earlier. “This public holiday is exclusively applicable to the jurisdictions of the following local government bodies’ elections,” stated a release.
Generally, RBI-managed markets, which include government bonds, call, triparty repo, and foreign exchange markets, observe closures on holidays recognized under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Nevertheless, the Reserve Bank of India has yet to provide any updates regarding this, and January 15 is absent from the RBI’s holiday schedule for Mumbai.
The State Election Commission (SEC) has revealed that the election schedule for the 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra will be conducted in a single phase on January 15. Results for the BMC election are set to be declared on Friday, January 16.
The nomination process for candidates in the BMC, which is Asia’s largest civic body with a budget exceeding ₹74,000 crore for 2025-26, commenced on December 23, 2025.
Candidates were permitted to submit their applications until December 30, 2025. The deadline for withdrawing applications was January 2, and the final list of candidates was published on January 3.
A total of 1,03,44,315 individuals are eligible to participate in the BMC election, comprising 55,16,707 male voters, 48,26,509 female voters, and 1,099 voters from other categories.
In the 2017 civic elections, the undivided Shiv Sena secured 84 seats.
