While addressing the media, Fadnavis emphasized that a convenient and accessible transportation system is being developed in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, integrating metro, e-buses, and water transport to enhance accessibility within the city.
A metro network and a comprehensive transport system are being established in the MMR, accompanied by a bus network primarily featuring e-buses and vehicles using alternative fuels, with major water transport projects planned for the third phase, he added.
The chief minister noted that Mumbai now ranks second in the country, following Delhi, with over 100 km of functional metro lines. He also mentioned that the majority of metro projects will be finished in the upcoming two years, with plans to build a larger network than that of the national capital within the next three to four years.
With the rollout of the first phase of Metro Line 9, the city now boasts five operational metro corridors. This includes Metro Line 1 on the Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova route, Line 2A from Andheri West to Dahisar East, Line 7 connecting Dahisar East to Andheri East, and Line 3, known as Aqua Line, linking Colaba in south Mumbai to Bandra Kurla Complex and SEEPZ.
The initial phase of Metro Line 9 includes a 5.6-km elevated section with four stations: Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
Fadnavis mentioned that nearly 96% of the second phase—between Sai Baba Nagar and Subhash Chandra Bose Maidan in Mira-Bhayandar—has been completed, and the 4.3-km section with four additional stations is set to be inaugurated later this year.
“This metro will reduce a journey, which currently takes one to two hours, to about 30 minutes,” he stated, revealing that the project was developed at a cost of Rs 6,607 crore.
Fadnavis explained that the line will ensure seamless connectivity from Mira-Bhayandar to Colaba by interconnecting with Metro Line 7, and eventually with Lines 7A and 3.
Environmentally friendly features such as rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, regenerative braking, and solar panels have been integrated into the metro line, he noted.
The chief minister highlighted the success of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), mentioning that 80% of passengers have opted for cashless ticketing, while only 20% used cash.
In response to a question about a four-lane bridge reducing to two lanes in Mira-Bhayandar, Fadnavis stated that the structure has been constructed in a congested area and is only partially finished.
“Photographs were taken when it was only halfway done, leading to criticism and prompting officials to consider demolition,” he remarked, assuring that it will not seem accident-prone once completed.
As per a release, the integrated Metro Lines 7-9 corridor (Gundavali-Kashigaon), covering 19.79 km, will operate from 5:50 am to 11 pm, with a peak frequency of under six minutes.
A total of 276 services will be available on weekdays, 223 on Saturdays, and 205 on Sundays, it stated.
Following the launch of Metro Line 9, Lines 2A and 7 will function as separate corridors. Previously, services on these lines operated as a single stretch from Andheri East to Andheri West via Dahisar East.
Line 7 will connect with Line 9, facilitating direct travel from Andheri East to Mira-Bhayandar via Kashigaon. An interchange facility at Dahisar station will allow seamless transfers without exiting the paid area.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has updated the timetable for Lines 2A and 7 to enhance frequency and streamline network integration, with the new schedule starting Wednesday.
According to the MMRDA, the new segment of Line 9 will enable seamless connectivity with the existing metro framework, linking commuters to Line 7 and extending access to Line 7A, which leads to Andheri (East) and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
