Jammu & Kashmir Claims First BCCI Title as Its U-16 Team Secures Vijay Merchant Trophy in Plate Group
The Jammu and Kashmir Under-16 team has secured the Vijay Merchant Trophy Plate Group title, marking the Union Territory’s inaugural BCCI championship, after triumphing over Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs on the final’s third day here on Tuesday.

J&K accomplished the four-day match victory with one day remaining.


J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his congratulations to the J&K U-16 cricket team for winning the Vijay Merchant Trophy for the first time.

“A historic BCCI title and a commanding victory that showcases the burgeoning cricketing talent of Jammu & Kashmir,” stated the ‘X’ handle of the J&K Chief Minister’s Office.

J&K forged a first innings advantage of 300 runs, finishing with 400 all out in 95.1 overs, responding to Mizoram’s total of 100 all out from their first innings.

Captain Smagey Khajuria scored 102 runs off 174 balls for J&K, including 15 fours and one six, while Athrav Sharma contributed 92 not out off 137 balls, hitting 17 fours and one six.

In the northeastern state’s second innings on the match’s third day, J&K bowlers dismissed Mizoram for 118 runs in 42.4 overs.

Sanil Singh (3/15), Jaskaran Singh (2/8), and Hammaad Firdous (2/22) were the standout bowlers for J&K.

During Mizoram’s first innings, Sanil and Jaskaran also claimed three wickets each.

The Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 Elite competition is scheduled to take place from January 4-28.
