Iran-Israel Conflict: PM Modi Engages with Iranian President Pezeshkian, Urges for Tension Reduction
On Sunday (June 22), Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s “deep concern” to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the escalating conflict with Israel, advocating for a swift resolution through “dialogue and diplomacy”.

The conversation between Modi and Pezeshkian occurred shortly after the US targeted three significant nuclear sites in Iran — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — intertwining itself into the Israel-Iran conflict.

In a post on social media, Modi highlighted his “deep concern” over the recent tensions, stating that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for the prompt restoration of regional peace.
“We thoroughly discussed the current situation. I voiced deep concern regarding the recent escalations,” Modi remarked. “I reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, advocating dialogue and diplomacy as vital for swiftly achieving regional peace, security, and stability,” the prime minister stated.

The US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities raised fears of a broader regional conflict, prompting several countries and organizations to urge restraint. Following the bombing by American B-2 bombers, US President Donald Trump declared that the Iranian nuclear sites were “completely and totally obliterated”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the US actions as a “grave violation” of the UN Charter, international law, and the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, asserting that the attack on Iran’s “peaceful nuclear installations” was unjustified.

“These incidents this morning are intolerable and will have lasting repercussions. Every UN member should be alarmed by this reckless, unlawful, and criminal conduct,” he stated. Iran is prepared to explore all options to safeguard its sovereignty, he added in a statement.

The European Union, comprising 27 nations, called on all parties to de-escalate and return to negotiations. “I urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table, and prevent further escalation,” stated EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. The EU foreign ministers are set to convene on Monday (June 23) to discuss the situation.

The UK and various other countries have also called for calm. However, China and Russia have yet to make an official response to the current developments following the US airstrikes.
