IPL Icon Discusses Rishabh Pant’s Struggles with Intense Self-Pressure
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen raised questions about Rishabh Pant’s abilities as a top-order batter following LSG’s loss to DC in IPL 2026 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday.

Pant, the priciest player in league history, was run out for seven runs, contributing to LSG’s collapse at 141 in under 19 overs.

After the match, he expressed his intention to bat at the top-order for the remainder of the tournament.
“I think it’s a 50-50 decision, but we’ll see. But (you’ll) definitely see me in the top order,” he told the broadcaster.

Pietersen is not too fond of that decision.

“Considering the strength and depth of LSG’s batting, is Rishabh Pant really suited to be an opening batter? I think he may have overstepped his previous position in the line-up compared to last year,” Pietersen commented to JioHotstar.

“Last season, he was moved down the order, and suddenly it’s, ‘I’m going to the top’. I believe he needs to go out and enjoy his cricket.” The former England captain mentioned that Pant is only adding more pressure on himself by elevating his batting position.

“Don’t force yourself to bat at (number) three; enjoy the benefits of that role. He puts immense pressure on himself by opening the batting,” Pietersen stated.

Pietersen’s praise for Sameer Rizvi

Pietersen, who mentored Delhi Capitals last year, mentioned that the franchise should invest in Sameer Rizvi after the Uttar Pradesh batter scored an impressive 70 not out off 47 balls (5 fours, 4 sixes) to change the game against LSG.

LSG had put the Capitals in a tough spot at 26 for four during their chase of 142, but Rizvi formed an invaluable unbeaten 119-run partnership for the fourth wicket to lead his team to victory.

“He handled the situation excellently, and I’m not surprised. I spent a lot of time with Sameer last season, observing closely. He scored a hundred in a warm-up match but, unfortunately, didn’t find a spot in the first half of the tournament,” Pietersen noted.

However, when he got his chance later in the season, he showcased his talent, and many took notice, saying, ‘This kid is a proper player, and we should definitely invest in him for some time.’ “Investing in a young player requires trust that they can deliver, and he proved that in this game.”

“He truly performed under pressure. Leading your team to victory in a crucial match, particularly the first game of the IPL, during a tense situation and with many eyes on you, feels far more rewarding than merely scoring a hundred in a high-scoring game,” Pietersen added.

Pant will aim to regain his batting form as LSG gets ready to face SRH away from home on April 5.
