IndiGo faced ongoing operational issues on Saturday (December 6), with Mumbai Airport reporting 117 cancellations by 12:00 pm. These cancellations comprised 54 arrivals and 63 departures, contributing to travel disruptions across major cities.
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport also experienced significant effects, with 37 departures and 49 arrivals cancelled earlier in the day. Airport officials urged passengers to verify their flight status prior to heading to the terminal.
The airline has been grappling with a mix of crew shortages and operational challenges this week, leading to widespread delays and cancellations, impacting passenger movement nationwide. Delhi Airport issued a notice indicating that IndiGo’s operations were “steadily resuming” after earlier substantial disruptions, when over 1,000 flights were cancelled.
“We are pleased to announce that IndiGo flight operations are now gradually returning to normal… Please verify the status of your booking and flight before departing from home,” the airport stated.
On Friday (December 5), the government introduced measures aimed at aiding the stabilization of IndiGo’s operations in light of the extensive disruptions. These initiatives seek to facilitate passenger movement during a peak travel period.
In the meantime, SpiceJet has expanded its schedule from Mumbai for December 6, adding more flights on domestic and international routes. The airline indicated that this adjustment was made to meet the heightened demand following IndiGo’s cancellations.
The Indian Railways has also boosted capacity on various routes to meet passenger needs. A total of 116 additional coaches have been allocated across 37 premium trains, which are operating over 114 enhanced trips.
Southern Railway executed the most augmentations, followed by Northern Railway, Western Railway, East Central Railway, East Coast Railway, Eastern Railway, and Northeast Frontier Railway. These additions consist of Chair Car, Sleeper, 3AC, and 2AC coaches, depending on the route.
Railways have also launched special train services, including:
- Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Terminal–Gorakhpur Special (05591/05592)
- New Delhi–Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Vande Bharat Special (02439/02440)
- New Delhi–Mumbai Central Superfast Special (04002/04001)
- Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Special (04080)
These initiatives, effective from December 6 onward, are designed to enhance passenger availability amid ongoing aviation disruptions.
