The facility, created by Smart Green Aquaculture Ltd at Kandukur Mandal in Ranga Reddy District, Telangana, illustrates that high-value cold-water species can be cultivated year-round in tropical environments through precision engineering and advanced water recirculation technologies, according to an official statement.

This project challenges the established belief that premium aquaculture species are limited to specific climatic zones, highlighting technology as the primary factor influencing aquaculture viability instead of climate.
The facility doubles as a live training and demonstration center, offering youth practical experience in modern aquaculture systems, automation, and biosecurity.
Major investment in Fisheries Sector The Centre has considerably increased funding in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in recent years. Since 2015, total investments amounting to ₹38,572 crore have been approved or announced across various initiatives.
Cold-water fisheries are emerging as a promising sector, fueled by growing market demand for premium species, expanding export avenues, and heightened investments in sustainable aquaculture technologies.
Trout farming, primarily situated in Himalayan and hill states such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, utilizes cold, well-oxygenated water from snow-fed streams and rivers.

Production and expansion The Department of Fisheries has developed rainbow trout hatcheries that have significantly boosted fish production and generated local employment.
With the introduction of new hatcheries and advanced aquaculture techniques, an annual production of 14 lakh trout seeds has been achieved.
Uttarakhand has entered into an MoU with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) under the vibrant village scheme to supply trout fish.
The Department of Fisheries has also announced the development of cold-water fisheries clusters in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.
The government is positioning aquaculture as a strategic growth engine through targeted investments, technology integration, and institutional reforms, moving the sector from subsistence-based practices to a tech-driven, market-oriented system designed to meet rising domestic demand and export opportunities.
