Speaking at the ‘Run for Girl Child’ marathon organized by Dr Hedgewar Seva Smruti Seva Samiti in Surat, Shah highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant role in bringing the Commonwealth Games to Gujarat.
“After Commonwealth 2030, we are aiming to host the Olympics in 2036 here,” he remarked.
Discussing India’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the nation earned eight medals, Shah emphasized that the target for 2036 should be at least 100 medals, with Gujarat expected to contribute 10.
He expressed his belief that women athletes would secure at least two of those medals.
Shah also commended the Indian men’s cricket team for their achievements in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
He pointed out the increasing influence of women’s sports, noting that while parents once dreamed of their sons emulating Virat Kohli, many now aspire for their daughters to follow in the footsteps of cricketers like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur.
