The 36-year-old explosive batter, along with his often underappreciated off-spin bowling, has played 149 ODI matches for Australia. His innings are renowned, including what many consider the greatest one-day performance of all time.
Maxwell made a remarkable entrance against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, when his team was struggling at 7-91. In a tense situation, while grappling with severe cramps in sweltering conditions, he scored an astonishing 201 off just 128 balls, turning the tide and securing victory. Australia ultimately clinched the World Cup, triumphing over favorites India in Ahmedabad.
“I felt somewhat like I was letting the team down due to how my body was responding to the conditions. I had a meaningful discussion with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and asked for his perspective moving forward,” he shared on the ‘Final Word Podcast’.
“We discussed the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, ‘I don’t think I will be able to make that. It’s time to start planning for those in my position to have a chance and truly make it their own’.” Maxwell recently returned from an IPL campaign with the Punjab Kings that was interrupted by a broken finger.
“I always maintained that I wouldn’t relinquish my position if I felt capable of competing. I didn’t want to cling on for a few series and play for selfish reasons,” the explosive batter remarked.
With a strike rate of 126, Maxwell ranks second in ODI cricket, only behind the West Indies’ powerhouse Andre Russell. He has scored four hundreds, 23 half-centuries, and claimed 77 wickets.
“Maxwell has decided to focus on preparing for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, alongside the Big Bash League and his other global commitments,” stated Cricket Australia in a press release.
Throughout his illustrious one-day career, which included two ODI World Cup victories, Maxwell delivered numerous outstanding performances. His announcement follows the significant retirement of fellow Australian team member Marcus Stoinis, who opted to step away from ODI cricket earlier this year.
“I reflect on being selected ahead of my time, completely unexpectedly. I was just proud to play a few matches for Australia, thinking that would be it,” Maxwell recalled regarding his ODI journey.
“Since then, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of being dropped, returned to the team, participated in several World Cups, and been part of remarkable squads.” Todd Greenberg, CA Chief Executive, praised Maxwell’s thrilling and impactful one-day international career.
“Glenn’s explosive batting has illuminated the cricketing world and has been a fundamental part of Australia’s ongoing success in the 50-over format, especially his heroic contributions to the 2023 World Cup victory,” he stated.
“Like other legends of the game, crowds have flocked to watch Glenn bat, and many children have been inspired to pick up a bat after witnessing him dismantle opposition bowlers with his astonishing array of shots.” George Bailey, former Australian captain and current chief selector, also spoke highly of Maxwell.
“Glenn will be remembered as one of the most dynamic players in the one-day format, playing crucial roles in two ODI World Cup triumphs.
“His natural talent and skill are extraordinary. Fortunately, he still has a lot to offer Australia in T20 cricket. With everything going well, he will be integral as we progress toward the World Cup early next year,” Bailey added.
