With a budget exceeding ₹60 crore, KKR was always positioned as the frontrunner to secure this significant player. However, they faced competition from both Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their pursuit of Green.
Interestingly, the Mumbai Indians (MI), with only
₹2.75 crore available, initiated the bidding for Green. RR then took over when the five-time IPL champions withdrew, pushing KKR to their limits as the bids climbed to ₹13 crore.
Next, CSK took control of the bidding. There were brief pauses at the ₹19 crore and ₹25 crore marks, as both sides recalibrated their strategies, but KKR appeared determined to add Green to their roster and enhance their batting strength.
However, Green won’t be receiving the full amount of ₹25.2 crore following the auction. Ahead of the 2025 mega-auction, the BCCI adjusted auction regulations to limit the tendency of foreign players to exclusively enter the mini-auction for hefty paychecks due to the imbalanced demand-and-supply situation.
As part of these changes, the BCCI imposed a ceiling on the take-home salary of foreign internationals in the mini-auction, ensuring they could not earn more than the top retention slab or the highest-selling player from the previous year, whichever was lower.
Given that the top retention slab in 2025 was ₹18 crore, Green’s payout cannot exceed this amount. The remaining ₹7.2 crore will be allocated to the BCCI’s Player Welfare Fund, ensuring Indian players receive equitable treatment in the nation’s premier T20 league.
