Brazil's Bolsonaro exits hospital and goes back to prison in the capital, Brasilia.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from a hospital in Brasilia on Thursday, one week after undergoing double hernia surgery. A vehicle transported the controversial ex-leader back to the federal police headquarters, where he is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for his role in a coup d’état designed to retain his position in office.

Hospital DF Star confirmed Bolsonaro’s release followed additional minor medical procedures, all after the double hernia surgery, which was successful without complications.

Brazil’s Supreme Court permitted the former president, who served from 2019 to 2022, to leave for the surgery.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who sentenced Bolsonaro, rejected his request for house arrest upon leaving the hospital.

Since being stabbed in the abdomen at a campaign rally in 2018, Bolsonaro has undergone several medical procedures.

At the federal police headquarters in Brasilia, Bolsonaro has no contact with the few other inmates. His confinement includes a 12-square-metre (approximately 130-square-foot) room featuring a bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, television, and a desk.

In December, Bolsonaro made waves in Brazilian politics by appointing his eldest son, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, as his political party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election, challenging the sitting president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro have commented on the ex-leader’s return to prison following his hospitalization.

Michelle Bolsonaro shared via social media that “there is a Brazil of good people who love you and pray for you.”

“We will overcome the difficult days,” she wrote.

In September, Bolsonaro and several allies were convicted by a panel of Supreme Court justices for attempting to undermine Brazil’s democratic system after his defeat in the 2022 election.

The conspiracy involved plans to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and de Moraes, alongside efforts to incite an insurrection in early 2023.

Bolsonaro also faced convictions for leading an armed criminal organization and attempting to violently abolish the democratic rule of law, which he denies.
