Supporters create buzz
On May 18, supporters of Chirag generated excitement within NDA politics in Bihar by displaying posters and banners that positioned him as a potential Chief Minister. It is probable that Nitish took note of these activities, as he is reputed for staying informed about political developments. Previously, when part of the Mahagathbandhan government, he openly named leaders from both his party and others during public gatherings.
Was it to clarify the CM post?
Speculation surrounds the purpose of Chirag’s meeting with Nitish. Some suggest that Nitish might have been displeased with the posters, perceiving them as potentially divisive for the NDA. BJP leaders have unequivocally stated that Nitish will be the Chief Minister again. Chirag has also hinted at his desire to engage more deeply in Bihar politics, expressing ambitions to contest the Assembly elections in 2029. His party’s state executive has endorsed his political ambitions in Bihar. The posters have intensified speculation, which may not have sat well with Nitish. Currently, NDA leaders are openly backing Nitish for the next Chief Ministerial role.
Chirag’s growing role in politics
Chirag’s name is being discussed in Bihar politics for three principal reasons. Firstly, there are ongoing seat-sharing negotiations. Unlike last time, he seeks to be part of the NDA and is aiming for 40 seats, despite not having any MLAs at the moment. In the previous assembly elections, his party managed to secure one seat and finished second in 14 others. Additionally, during the Lok Sabha elections, his party earned five seats despite him being the sole MP initially. However, his only MLA later switched to JDU. Although JDU did not perform impressively in the Lok Sabha elections, it boasts 12 MPs, equivalent to BJP’s count. Nitish has reaffirmed his commitment to remain with the NDA, which also supports him as a key ally.
Nitish remains the NDA leader
Following the meeting, Chirag reiterated that Nitish will continue to be the Chief Ministerial face in Bihar. This sentiment has also been echoed by the BJP, RLM chief Upendra Kushwaha, and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi. A previous comment from Union Home Minister and BJP MP Amit Shah had cast doubt on potential political changes, but Nitish has demonstrated his ability to navigate challenging circumstances. Though JDU ranks as the third-largest party in the assembly, Nitish holds the Chief Minister position. Historically, he has not governed solely with his party’s backing but has consistently garnered sufficient support. The meeting on Monday indicates that Chirag does not plan to contest this status for the time being.
