Bhujbal’s Appointment Ignites Competition for Guardian Minister in Nashik

Bhujbal: Fadnavis was eager to include me in the cabinet during its initial expansion in December.

Chhagan Bhujbal, a seasoned NCP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, took his oath as a Cabinet Minister on Tuesday, May 20, prompting a new wave of political activity in Nashik.

His entry means that Nashik now has four representatives in the Maharashtra Cabinet: Dada Bhuse (Shiv Sena – Shinde faction), Manikrao Kokate, Narhari Zirwal, and Bhujbal (NCP – Ajit Pawar faction).

Bhujbal’s return has revived the ongoing debate regarding the crucial guardian minister position for Nashik.

Previously, there was a quiet contest among BJP’s Girish Mahajan, Shiv Sena’s Dada Bhuse, and NCP’s Manikrao Kokate. However, Bhujbal’s experience, strong ties to Nashik, and status as an OBC leader have altered the balance of power.

The appointment of a guardian minister for Nashik has reportedly been delayed due to opposition from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which has staked its claim to the role. Bhujbal’s re-entry could complicate matters further.

In response to the speculation, Manikrao Kokate sought to minimize any perceived rivalry.

“There is no competition from my end. The party’s interests come first. Bhujbal’s inclusion strengthens Nashik and the state,” Kokate stated, emphasizing that Bhujbal adds important OBC representation to the cabinet. He downplayed suggestions of friction, asserting, “There are no differences between us. We stand united in our service to the party.”

Sources indicate that Bhujbal’s return—previously denied a cabinet position—aims to solidify OBC backing in Nashik, Marathwada, and Ahilya Nagar as civic elections loom, which the Supreme Court has mandated to be conducted within four months.

With Dhananjay Munde stepping down for health reasons, the NCP lacked a strong OBC figure. Following internal talks, Ajit Pawar made the tactical decision to bring Bhujbal back into the fold.

To avoid further strife over Nashik’s guardianship, it is suggested that Bhujbal may be appointed as Guardian Minister of Beed instead. Nevertheless, insiders have indicated he remains keen on the Nashik role and would accept it if offered.

On the other hand, Bhujbal’s inclusion faced criticism from Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil, who accused Ajit Pawar of encouraging caste politics. Kokate, however, responded thoughtfully: “That’s his personal view. I can’t speak to his relationship with Bhujbal, but Ajit Dada is a fair and capable leader.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Kokate remarked, “If I had joined Ajit Dada earlier, it would have benefited me. But as they say, better late than never.”

With Bhujbal reinstated in the Cabinet and fresh political momentum in Nashik, attention is now focused on the guardian minister appointment.

Bhujbal has indicated his readiness to accept any responsibility assigned by the Chief Minister. Nonetheless, sources suggest he remains eager for the Nashik portfolio. If this comes to fruition, it could greatly alter the local power dynamics ahead of the pivotal civic polls.
