Barack Obama responds to the shooting of Alex Pretti as demonstrators call for ICE agents to exit Minneapolis.
Former President Barack Obama has responded to the current civil unrest in the United States. The ex-White House resident took to X to share a joint statement with former First Lady Michelle Obama.

In his message, he stated, “The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.”

This statement follows the fatal incident involving hospital nurse Alex Pretti and Rene Good, both of whom were killed by ICE agents who reportedly opted for lethal force rather than de-escalation.

Obama’s statement continued, “For weeks now, citizens nationwide have been justifiably outraged by the sight of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents operating without accountability, using tactics seemingly aimed at intimidating, harassing, provoking, and endangering the residents of a major American city.”

He further highlighted the Trump Administration’s role in worsening the tension instead of alleviating the situation.

This comes at a moment when hundreds of Minneapolis residents have taken to the streets to demand that immigration agents, particularly ICE and its representatives, exit the city and state of Minnesota.

Following the shooting of a man by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis, Democrats called for the departure of federal immigration officers from the state. This provoked hundreds of protesters to march on the icy streets, raising tensions in a city already fraught with unrest after a previous shooting weeks earlier.

Family members have identified the deceased as Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse known for opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. In the wake of the incident, a furious crowd gathered, with demonstrators clashing with federal agents wielding flashbangs and batons.
