Almost 200 tourists trapped in Chungthang due to landslides in North Sikkim.
Nearly 200 tourists were trapped in Chungthang, North Sikkim, as multiple landslides caused by heavy rainfall disrupted road access, officials reported on Wednesday morning.

Mangan District Collector Anant Jain indicated that the landslides took place along the essential Chungthang-Lachen route on Tuesday night, leaving travelers en route to Lachen stranded midway.

Those stranded were provided overnight accommodations at an ITBP camp and a gurudwara in Chungthang, he mentioned.
Restoration efforts by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are currently ongoing, according to officials, who stated that authorities will assess the situation and may permit travel only after confirming that routes are safe, based on weather conditions.
Some travelers have returned to Gangtok and canceled their travel arrangements, they noted.

Meanwhile, the road to Lachung, which was also obstructed on Tuesday night, has been cleared, allowing tourists from that area to return safely to Gangtok on Wednesday morning.

Officials reported that the situation is being closely monitored as intermittent rain continues in the region.

The Lachen route had only recently reopened on March 9 after significant damage from the 2023 glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).

Moreover, popular tourist spots such as Tsomgo Lake and Nathula remain closed due to heavy snowfall in recent days.
