Air India CEO Campbell Wilson: India's Position in Global Aviation is Nascent with Significant Growth Potential Ahead
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson recently shared valuable insights into the airline’s ambitious turnaround strategy, operational challenges, and future growth direction during an open dialogue with Shereen Bhan, Managing Editor of CNBC-TV18. At the onset of the conversation, Wilson emphasized the significant changes underway at Air India since its acquisition by Tata. He mentioned the ongoing modernization efforts and the vision to evolve into a world-class global carrier with a unique Indian identity.

One of the most notable disclosures was the scale and pace of the airline’s transformation. Wilson outlined a five-year plan focused on progressing from stabilization to sufficiency and ultimately to efficiency. Over the past three years, the airline has expanded its fleet from beneath 100 aircraft to nearly 300, with plans for additional growth backed by a prominent order for 470 aircraft.

Considerable investments have been directed toward enhancing physical infrastructure, IT systems, product quality, and human resources. Wilson stressed that these initiatives are not temporary fixes; rather, they constitute a sustained effort aimed at bolstering Air India’s financial standing and operational performance over the long term.

During the interview, he elaborated on the extensive refurbishment program currently in progress. “The refurbishment of the narrow-body fleet is almost 75% complete, with expectations to finalize the remainder by year-end. The wide-body refit program, essential for long-haul routes, is ongoing and anticipated to be completed around 2027,” Wilson remarked, adding that these enhancements will improve passenger experiences and enhance the visibility of the new Air India’s offerings across the network.

Wilson also touched upon operational resilience, recalling how the airline navigated flight disruptions during recent airspace closures due to geopolitical tensions. Through proactive contingency planning, swift rerouting, and close collaboration, Air India minimized passenger disruption despite the challenging circumstances.

Looking ahead, Wilson is optimistic about the potential of India’s aviation market, pointing out that air travel propensity in India remains significantly lower than in other major markets, highlighting substantial growth opportunities. He also recognized challenges like increasing airport fees and regulatory changes but reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to making travel affordable and accessible.

The airline is also committing to sustainability, with initiatives to enhance the use of sustainable aviation fuel and deploy more fuel-efficient aircraft within its operations. Wilson noted that adjustments in the tax treatment of operating leases would be advantageous, as these can significantly impact cost structures.

Wilson concluded by calling for national support, expressing pride in Air India’s mission to symbolize India on the global stage. He envisions an airline that merges world-class service with Indian hospitality, prepared to proudly represent the nation for years to come.
