Air India Flight Crash: Ahmedabad Airport Halts Operations Following Takeoff Incident of London-Bound Aircraft
Flight operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad have been temporarily halted following a crash involving an Air India aircraft bound for London shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon.

“All flight operations are temporarily halted until further notice,” a spokesperson for SVPIA confirmed, noting that the airport is not operational due to the incident.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft — a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Flight AI171 — crashed in a nearby locality soon after departure. The flight was headed to London Gatwick. Emergency response teams have been dispatched, and an investigation is in progress. Casualties are feared, though official confirmation regarding the damage or injuries is still pending.

Air India acknowledged the incident on its official X account, stating:

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025. We are currently gathering details and will provide updates at the earliest via our X account.”

As a precaution, flight operations at the airport will remain suspended until at least 5:00 PM IST today. Travelers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest schedule updates and alternate arrangements.

This crash has revived painful memories of the 1988 aviation tragedy near Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of 133 individuals. Only two survivors were from that crash, including Ashok Agarwal, a local textile businessman who later passed away in 2020. He had lost his wife and 11-month-old daughter in that incident.

Meanwhile, IndiGo also posted an advisory on X, informing travelers that flights at Ahmedabad airport would be affected due to restrictions following the Air India flight crash.

Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the crash site to aid rescue and recovery efforts. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
