Google has unveiled a significant update for Gmail, ushering it into the Gemini era with AI-driven features aimed at enhancing users’ inbox management. This update, shared by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X, includes features like AI Overviews, Suggested Replies, Proofread, and AI Inbox, among others.
In a post on X, Pichai remarked, “We launched Gmail on April Fool’s Day in 2004. 20+ years later, we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era. AI Overviews, Suggested personalized replies, Proofread, AI Inbox with new streamlined views and suggested topics to catch up on and loads more.”
The new functionalities are designed to turn Gmail into a personal and proactive inbox assistant, aiding users in managing information flow and prioritizing key emails, as noted in a blog post by the tech giant. AI Overviews summarize lengthy email threads and provide answers to questions, streamlining the process of finding important details. “AI Overviews turn information into answers without the digging. When you open an email with dozens of replies, Gmail synthesizes the entire conversation into a concise summary of key points. “And when you ask your inbox a question, we use Gemini to generate a simple AI Overview with the answer. AI Overview conversation summaries are rolling out today for everyone at no cost. The ability to ask your inbox questions with AI Overviews is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers,” the post stated. Suggested Replies deliver one-click responses that align with the user’s writing style and tone, while Proofread offers advanced grammar, tone, and style checks for refined emails. “Everyone can use Help Me Write to polish emails or draft them from scratch. There are also new Suggested Replies (an update to Smart Replies), which utilize the context of your conversation to provide relevant, one-click responses that match your writing style. Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are rolling out to everyone at no cost,” added the company. Meanwhile, AI Inbox eliminates clutter and highlights essential emails. These features are enabled by Gemini 3, Google’s latest AI model. The update is presently rolling out in the US for Gmail users, including Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, starting with English and will soon be available in more languages and regions. The features are accessible as follows: AI Overview conversation summaries while the ability to ask inbox questions with AI Overviews is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are also available to everyone, with Proofread exclusive to subscribers.
