Elon Musk’s xAI Strategy Intensifies Focus on AI Videos Following OpenAI’s Decision to Cancel Sora

Elon Musk announced that his AI company, xAI, intends to enhance its AI video generator, taking advantage of the opportunity presented by rival OpenAI’s recent decision to discontinue the Sora product.

“The upcoming Grok Imagine release will be phenomenal,” Musk stated in a social media update, referring to xAI’s video creation tool. “We are fully committed.” He also posted several AI-generated videos produced with the Grok chatbot on Wednesday.

Musk, who helped establish OpenAI and has had conflicts with the organization, is striving to compete with ChatGPT and other chatbots by allowing users to swiftly create realistic images and videos, among other functionalities. During a staff meeting in February, the Imagine video product was highlighted as one of xAI’s four primary focuses.
OpenAI’s decision to shut down the Sora video application could present an opening for other competitors, including xAI, Runway AI Inc., and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. However, the announcement by the ChatGPT creator also raises questions regarding the financial viability and benefits of providing an AI video service.

The free Sora app quickly climbed to the top of Apple’s App Store following its launch late last year, but has since decreased in popularity. Similar to other AI video generators, Sora requires significantly more computing power. OpenAI’s choice to discontinue the service aligns with the company’s initiative to streamline its diverse product offerings.

Musk’s commitment to xAI’s video product might face challenges due to recent staff exits. Guodong Zhang, a co-founder of xAI who oversaw Imagine, departed from the company earlier this month, along with Haotian Liu, another employee involved in the video strategy.

XAI’s Grok chatbot has also encountered global criticism for disseminating nonconsensual explicit images.
