Leading Aluminum Producer in the Middle East Reports Damage to Primary Smelter
Emirates Global Aluminium’s largest metal-production facility suffered “substantial damage” during a missile and drone attack from Iran on Saturday, marking another setback for the region’s commodity sector amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The United Arab Emirates firm stands as the top aluminum producer in the region and a vital supplier to international markets. Energy and metal producers in the Persian Gulf are already hampered by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and incidents like this may prolong the recovery time for operations following the war.

EGA is currently evaluating the extent of the damage at its Al Taweelah facility situated within the Khalifa Port industrial zone in Abu Dhabi, according to the company’s statement. Several employees were reported injured; however, it did not confirm whether operations at the facility have been halted.
The media office of Abu Dhabi reported earlier on Saturday that six individuals were injured due to three fires ignited by debris from the interception of ballistic missiles near the Kezad industrial zone. These strikes form part of a broader series of assaults by Iran on Gulf nations, continuing even as discussions for a potential ceasefire were underway by the Trump administration.

As the largest non-energy industrial enterprise in the UAE, EGA manages two smelters, located in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Al Taweelah site is positioned midway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the Khalifa Economic Zone along the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, the Dubai facility is located in the Jebel Ali port and free zone area.

The Al Taweelah smelter produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal in 2025. At the commencement of Israel and the US’s military actions against Iran last month, the company had considerable metal reserves offshore as well as in various international locations, according to the statement. It has utilized these external supplies to satisfy customer demands.

EGA has positioned itself as a significant international investor and is part of the UAE’s commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the US over the coming decade. The UAE ranks as the second largest aluminum supplier to the US, trailing Canada, and is in the process of constructing the first new American smelter in decades in Oklahoma.

In the US, EGA also operates a recycling facility in Minnesota, which allows it to take advantage of domestically manufactured metals being sold at elevated prices due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
