What it means
X plans to open-source its entire algorithm, including the code responsible for recommending both organic posts and advertisements, Musk stated. This will allow for scrutiny of how X determines which posts show up on timelines and how ads are targeted.
“This will occur every four weeks, accompanied by detailed developer notes, to inform you of any changes,” he wrote.
Previously, numerous X users expressed concern over receiving fewer posts from accounts they actually followed and more from unfamiliar or unrelated sources.
In October,
Musk responded to these issues and acknowledged that X had identified a ‘significant bug’ in its ‘For You’ recommendation algorithm. He indicated that this issue was influencing the content users encountered on their timelines and assured that the company would address it.
How X works
X has increasingly relied on artificial intelligence to determine the content displayed on users’ feeds. The company is enhancing its recommendation system with the integration of Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot.
In July 2025, prosecutors in Paris initiated an investigation into X due to concerns regarding the algorithm’s operation. Authorities speculated that the platform’s recommendation system might be biased and could be mishandling user data.
Nonetheless, Musk has not clarified the rationale for making X’s algorithm open source. This decision comes amidst ongoing backlash faced by both Musk and the company from regulators regarding the type of content shown to users on the platform.
Grok under fire
Recently, Grok has faced criticism after users discovered its ability to generate AI-edited images that digitally alter photos by removing clothing. It has been under fire for producing sexualized deepfakes of women and minors.
