During a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to inquiries regarding the circumstances in Iran.
“We are closely monitoring developments in Iran. As you may have seen, we have issued an advisory. Currently, there are around 10,000 Indian nationals and people of Indian origin in the country,” Jaiswal stated.
Protests against deteriorating economic conditions began in Tehran approximately two weeks ago.
A significant number of Iranian provinces have experienced these protests, resulting in loss of life.
The demonstrations were initiated by a drastic decline in the value of the Iranian currency, rial, compared to the US dollar.
Jaiswal was also questioned about the reported detention of several Indian crew members, along with others, on a tanker by Iranian authorities last December, and about any consular access related to the matter.

Reports from various media outlets indicated that the Iranian authorities had seized the tanker for purportedly violating certain regulations.
”Yes, we have requested consular access… We understand that 10 of them have been detained. Our embassy is in contact with the Iranian authorities regarding this issue, and we have also sought consular access to check on their well-being and offer any necessary assistance,” Jaiswal said.
