"Why is this discussion necessary now?" Priyanka Gandhi on 'Vande Mataram' discussions in the Lok Sabha.

On Monday, December 8, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra raised concerns about the intention behind discussing Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha, suggesting that the government is trying to distract the public from significant issues.

PM Modi initiated the conversation on India’s national song Vande Mataram on December 8, marking its 150-year anniversary in 2025. Approximately 10 hours have been designated for these discussions in Parliament.

“When we refer to ‘Vande Mataram’, we recall the complete history of the freedom struggle – its essence and ethics,” stated the Congress MP in the Lok Sabha, adding, “This debate strikes me as odd. This song is integral to the nation’s identity. What is the need for such a debate now? What’s the objective?”

‘Two Reasons’

She explained that the discussion is occurring due to the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, implying that Modi’s government seeks to shift focus away from “critical public concerns.”

“There are two reasons for the debate on Vande Mataram in the House today. Firstly, elections are nearing in West Bengal. In this context, our prime minister aims to assert his influence,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remarked.

“Secondly, the government seeks to place fresh accusations on those who fought for our freedom and sacrificed for the nation. By doing so, it aims to divert public attention from the vital issues,” she continued.

‘The truth is…’

She criticized PM Modi’s policies for undermining the country, stating that while he may be an effective speaker, his speeches lack substantial evidence.

“The truth is Modi ji is no longer the prime minister he used to be. This is becoming evident. His confidence is waning. His policies are detrimental to the country, and my colleagues in power are quiet because, deep down, they too feel embarrassed by this,” she expressed.

The MP emphasized that discussions should focus on the issues regarding betting apps linked to the Prime Minister’s Office and the ministers mentioned in the Epstein files.

She also pointed out that the duration of PM Narendra Modi’s tenure matches the number of years Jawaharlal Nehru spent in prison for the nation. “After that, Nehru ji led the country as prime minister for 17 years and contributed significantly to its development.”
