Jammu Airport Enhances to CAT-II Navigation for Better Low-Visibility and Night Operations; New Terminal Building Expected to Be Finished by Late 2026
Jammu airport has upgraded its navigation system to CAT-II (Category II), enabling low-visibility operations, with preparations for night operations awaiting approval from defense and security agencies, a senior official announced on December 10.

According to Jammu airport director Devender Yadav, the new terminal building—which includes expanded parking, six aerobridges, and a five-fold capacity increase—is set to be completed by the end of next year. Structural work and the elevated access road are already finished, with the remaining construction progressing at an accelerated pace.

“We experienced significant challenges with flight operations last winter due to poor visibility caused by dense fog. To tackle this issue, we have upgraded the airfield navigation system from CAT-1 to CAT-2.

“CAT-2 features more advanced instruments, allowing us to conduct flight operations in lower visibility conditions. The procedures for low-visibility operations have been established, and we conducted a preparatory meeting with all stakeholders. We are ready for low-visibility flight operations,” Yadav informed reporters.

Regarding the long-demanded late-night operations, Yadav indicated that the airfield is technically positioned for such operations.

“Being ready for night operations is just one factor; there are other considerations as well. In Jammu, the situation is quite complex due to security and defense issues. However, we are actively working on it,” the airport director added.

When asked about the ongoing modernization work at the airport and the anticipated completion date, Yadav mentioned that the project was expected to conclude by June next year but might now extend to the end of 2026 due to various delays, including the initiation of Operation Sindoor.

“The design of the new airport is modern and cutting-edge. The building will be five times the size of the current terminal. Similar to Delhi’s T3, an elevated bridge for departures is being constructed here,” he stated.

Yadav also highlighted that the expanded facilities would include 10 aircraft parking stands and six aerobridges, while the parking area will triple compared to the existing airfield.

“Overall, the new terminal building will be a game changer for civil aviation in Jammu. The structural work and elevated road have already been completed. Construction of the new terminal building is underway at an accelerated pace. We anticipate concluding this work by November or December next year,” the director concluded.
