The contract was awarded by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in the Lahaul and Spiti district for the establishment of the facility at Kaza Soma, which will be carried out on a turnkey basis.
The project entails the development of a comprehensive ice hockey rink along with supporting infrastructure, including a 500 kW solar power backup system, CCTV surveillance, lighting systems, and other related accessories.
Ice hockey, while considered a niche sport in India, is present in high-altitude areas such as Ladakh, Lahaul-Spiti, and certain regions of Himachal Pradesh, where the natural climatic conditions facilitate playing the sport.
Currently, India ranks in the lower tiers of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rankings and mainly participates in Division III tournaments, facing challenges in accessing modern training facilities and competition infrastructure.
This project also signifies a shift for ITI, moving beyond its traditional telecom manufacturing domain into infrastructure and system integration initiatives.
