According to the latest IMD bulletin, dense fog is expected in isolated regions of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on the mornings of December 16 and 17. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in northern states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh.
Delhi-NCR
The national capital region, which includes Delhi and neighboring areas, was shrouded in thick fog on Tuesday morning, creating challenging traffic conditions and limiting visibility.
Over 60 flights were canceled and more than 250 delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport due to low visibility, with similar disruptions noted in Chandigarh and other northern locales.
The combination of fog and air quality concerns has been exacerbated by the stagnant cold air conditions. In Delhi, moderate to severe fog is expected in the mornings, with temperatures dropping to 9–11°C and rising to highs of 22–24°C.
Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan
Thick fog is anticipated to persist in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during the early hours, complicating road transportation and daily routines for commuters. Dense fog is also expected in Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, and Shimla.
Patna, Bhagalpur, and Darbhanga are currently under a dense fog advisory. Several areas in Uttar Pradesh, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Agra, and Varanasi, will experience poor visibility due to the fog, as noted by the IMD.
A dense fog warning has been issued for Alwar, Sriganganagar, Jaipur, and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.
Southern states
Weather patterns in the southern states are more variable. While isolated light to moderate rainfall cannot be dismissed, meteorological forecasts predict primarily dry conditions across most locations, especially in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas.
Although widespread rainfall is not expected, coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Southern Interior Karnataka may see occasional showers due to a lingering weak easterly influence.
Central and Eastern India
In West Bengal, including Kolkata, conditions are expected to remain mostly dry and warm, featuring pleasant afternoon temperatures and hazy mornings. Meteorological data indicates no significant rainfall is expected in the area on December 16.
While light to moderate fog may develop in the mornings across Bihar and Jharkhand, most of Central and Eastern India is projected to stay dry. Fog-related visibility issues and cold mornings are likely to persist as a recurrent theme throughout the week in the Indo-Gangetic plains.
