The increase in visitors aligns with the Indian summer holiday period and follows Japan’s Golden Week celebrations, creating an ideal travel window. This timing facilitates easier access to accommodations and services for Indian tourists, along with favorable weather conditions and clear skies perfect for sightseeing.
“May has truly become a beneficial time for Indian travellers eager to discover Japan,” a tourism official stated in a press release. “It offers an excellent mix of pleasant weather, cultural immersion, and accessibility, making it a more favored month for visitors from India.”

Following a landmark year in 2024, when Japan welcomed around 233,100 Indian guests, the tourism momentum has gained traction in 2025. From January to May this year, approximately 142,400 Indian tourists traveled to Japan, marking a 39.6% increase compared to the same period last year, which experienced 102,100 arrivals from India.
The growth in Indian tourist numbers is attributed to the initiatives by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office, which has been actively promoting Japanese destinations and experiences customized for Indian travellers in collaboration with its partners.
Adding to the travel excitement is a new initiative linked to EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai. As part of the run-up to the international event, Japan has launched a Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign designed to enhance travel through an interactive and technological experience.
Through this campaign, international visitors can collect digital NFTs (non-fungible tokens) geo-tagged to specific tourist attractions throughout Japan. These digital tokens not only unlock exclusive content but also act as digital stamps of the traveller’s journey. Participation is free and open to all overseas tourists.

Visitors who collect these NFTs gain access to unique content and also have the opportunity to receive limited-edition souvenirs and memorabilia related to EXPO 2025. This campaign encourages exploration beyond the major cities, fostering deeper regional tourism and allowing travellers to create a personalized digital memory of their experience.
With such innovative initiatives and a robust upward trend in tourist numbers, Japan is rapidly establishing itself as a favorite destination for Indian travellers, with 2025 shaping up to be another record-breaking year.
