PhonePe introduces global travel insurance featuring complimentary eSIM: Eligibility and application process.

PhonePe has teamed up with Matrix Cellular International Services to provide a free international eSIM with every travel insurance policy bought on its platform. This initiative aims to assist Indian travelers in staying connected while also offering financial security during their international journeys.

The eSIM comes preloaded with 500MB of international data at no additional charge. After the policy purchase, users will receive the eSIM activation link via email, allowing instant use upon arrival, thus eliminating the necessity for local SIM cards or international roaming.

This service is compatible with smartphones that have eSIM capabilities.

Alongside connectivity, PhonePe’s travel insurance plans — starting at ₹23 per day — provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies, including hospitalization overseas
  • Trip cancellations or delays
  • Lost baggage or passport
  • Emergency trip interruptions

The platform enables users to compare policies from various insurers and purchase plans directly through the PhonePe app.

Additional features include:

  • Instant policy issuance within minutes.
  • 24×7 claim support from insurers.
  • Free cancellation up to one day prior to departure.

How to buy?

  • Launch the PhonePe app and navigate to the Insurance section.
  • Select ‘Travel Insurance’ and opt for ‘International Plans.’
  • Fill in trip details such as destination, dates, and number of travelers.
  • Compare available policy options.
  • Choose a plan, make the payment, and receive the policy along with the eSIM link instantly.

PhonePe emphasizes that this offering aims to enhance the security and connectivity of international travel for users through a streamlined digital process.

International travel insurance safeguards travelers against unforeseen circumstances like medical emergencies, flight delays, trip cancellations, and loss of baggage or passport while abroad.

Nevertheless, a significant number of Indian travelers still tend to neglect insurance when planning their trips.

Why travel insurance matters

A comprehensive international travel plan can shield against:

  • Medical emergencies abroad: Insurance facilitates cashless hospitalization and medical care worldwide.
  • Trip disruptions: Delays, cancellations, or rerouting can lead to additional costs, which insurance can help cover.
  • Lost baggage or passport: Insurance aids in recovering costs and maintaining the flow of travel plans.
  • Emergency trip interruptions: Sudden family emergencies or other circumstances can be financially safeguarded through insurance.
