Novak Djokovic uncertain about his future participation in the French Open following semifinal defeat.
Novak Djokovic is uncertain about returning to the French Open after his defeat against top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion expressed doubt about making an appearance at Roland-Garros next year when he will be 39. Immediately after the match, which ended 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) on Friday, Djokovic took a moment to set down his bag and acknowledge the audience around Court Philippe-Chatrier.

“I mean, this might have been my final match here, so I can’t say for sure. That’s why I felt a bit more emotional at the end,” Djokovic remarked.
“But if this was my farewell performance at Roland-Garros, it was a fantastic one in terms of atmosphere and the support I received from the fans.” After the loss, he kissed his hand and pressed it against the clay, as if bidding farewell to the French Open, where he has triumphed three times. He lifted his bags, gazed up into the stands, and walked towards the tunnel.

“Do I want to play more? Absolutely. But will I be here in 12 months? I’m not certain,” Djokovic admitted.

“I mentioned it could have been my last match (here), but I didn’t state that it was.” He confirmed his intention to participate in Wimbledon, starting June 30, and the US Open in August, but he’s unsure about his plans beyond that.

“I don’t truly know what tomorrow holds for me at this stage of my career. You know, I intend to keep moving forward,” he stated.

“Wimbledon is next, which is my childhood favorite tournament. I’ll do everything I can to prepare myself.” He achieved a historic 100th singles title just before the French Open but is primarily motivated to extend his record of Grand Slam victories. He aims for a 25th Grand Slam to claim sole possession of the most major titles in both men’s and women’s tennis.

However, his last Grand Slam win was at the 2023 US Open, marking the first time in seven years that he didn’t secure a Grand Slam title the previous year.

“I guess my best chances right now could be at Wimbledon, you know, for another slam or maybe on faster hard courts,” he said.

He captured the French Open in 2016, 2021, and 2023. His most recent Wimbledon title came in 2022.

“Wimbledon and US Open are definitely in my plans. That’s all I can say for the moment,” he added.

“But I really want to play Wimbledon and the US Open. Those two, without a doubt. As for the rest, I’m less certain.” Sinner hopes Djokovic continues his career a bit longer.

“First and foremost, I hope that’s not the case (he retires soon) because tennis needs him. It’s refreshing and amazing to see someone different from the younger players,” the 23-year-old Italian expressed.

“From my perspective, it’s wonderful to have him in the locker room and to witness his enthusiasm. He is a true role model for all of us.”
