Omar Abdullah spearheads initiatives to boost tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is leading an initiative to rejuvenate tourism in the Valley following the terror attack on April 22 that resulted in the loss of 26 lives, severely affecting the industry and causing tourists to cancel their plans due to safety concerns.

As a symbolic gesture to counteract the perception of danger, Abdullah hosted a meeting with his council of ministers and senior bureaucrats at a resort in Gulmarg, Baramulla district, on Wednesday (May 28). This was preceded by a similar gathering the day before at a resort in Pahalgam, South Kashmir—both of which are important tourist spots.

In Pahalgam, the Jammu CM took a bicycle ride with his children and was later seen by a picturesque river taking selfies. These visits are being perceived as confidence-building measures aimed at assuring tourists and industry stakeholders that Kashmir is still a safe and inviting destination.

After presiding over the meeting at the Gulmarg Club surrounded by lush meadows, tall pine trees, and snow-capped peaks, Abdullah took a Gondola ride up to Kongdori, a bowl-shaped area between Gulmarg and the Apharwat peak. His presence drew attention from tourists visiting from Gujarat and Mumbai, some of whom requested a meeting through his security team.

Abdullah was happy to oblige, greeting the tourists with handshakes and smiles, while inquiring about their experiences in the Valley. He praised their spirit and willingly posed for selfies and group photos.

The enthusiasm displayed by the tourists was mirrored by members of his delegation. Among those particularly touched by the encounter was Maviya, a 15-year-old from Mumbai celebrating his birthday. Clearly excited, he recalled, “It was very cool of him to wish me. It was a great experience to meet the chief minister.” Abdullah had asked him, “How old are you?” before extending his hand and offering birthday wishes.

The chief minister also conveyed anniversary greetings to a couple from Gujarat celebrating their special day. He used this occasion to urge all visiting tourists to share their positive experiences and help reshape the narrative about Kashmir.

Many visitors expressed their gratitude for the region’s hospitality and security measures. Mohammad Aftab, from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, noted that the environment in the Valley starkly contrasts with the negative portrayals often circulated. “People are very loving. They are so helpful. The hotel facilities are commendable, and the natural beauty is unparalleled,” he remarked.

In a post on X, Abdullah shared his reflections: “Met tourists at Gulmarg and was pleased to hear their encouraging feedback. Their joy and appreciation reflect the growing confidence in Kashmir as a welcoming and vibrant destination.”

The chief minister’s outreach, blending governance with grassroots engagement, has rekindled hope among tourism stakeholders and indicated the government’s commitment to restoring confidence in the Valley as a peaceful, prime travel destination.
