Shanghai Grounds 1,300 Flights as China Readies for Typhoon Dolphin
Shanghai’s two airports canceled over 1,300 flights, and authorities evacuated approximately 300,000 individuals from nearby areas as China braced for Typhoon Dolphin, which had already caused heavy rainfall in northern Taiwan.

The storm’s outer bands struck northern Taiwan, including Taipei, resulting in rainfall. Several Taiwanese airlines also suspended their flights to China on Sunday.

By Sunday morning, the maximum sustained winds of the storm were estimated at around 162 kilometers per hour (101 mph). It brings heavy rainfall, posing risks of severe flooding and landslides and is anticipated to impact Zhejiang province and northern parts of Fujian province late Sunday.

Forecasters in China warned that some areas might experience 200-400 mm (7.9–15.7 inches) of rain in the coming days. Authorities expressed concerns about significant landslide risks in Zhejiang.

Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports reportedly canceled about 60% of Sunday’s scheduled flights, according to the Paper, a state media outlet in Shanghai.

On Saturday evening, authorities in Zhejiang evacuated around 390,000 residents from the city of Taizhou, while more than 30,000 were evacuated from vulnerable areas in Shanghai.

Zhejiang officials also halted all water-related activities, including ferries and cruises.
