The India Open faced scrutiny after players raised concerns over the venue’s condition, including cleanliness, training facilities, and air quality. The tournament also experienced unexpected interruptions, with matches temporarily paused due to bird droppings and a monkey entering the spectator stands.
The controversy intensified when Danish player Mia Blichfeldt criticized the state of the warm-up and practice areas at both the K.D. Jadhav Indoor Hall and the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium during the India Open, highlighting the inadequate facilities.
“We’ve addressed every issue raised at that time, and I am pleased to report that these problems have been completely resolved. I am confident that this will be one of the best World Championships we’ve ever hosted,” BAI secretary general Sanjay Mishra told PTI during the draw ceremony for the World Championships, set to start in New Delhi on August 17.
“I would like to especially thank the Sports Ministry and SAI for their diligent efforts. Under the leadership of our president, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, preparations are going exceptionally well,” he added.
Mishra explained that the India Open served as a “test event” prior to the World Championships, assisting the organizers in pinpointing and addressing deficiencies well in advance.
“The stadium is nearly ready for the tournament. The India Open essentially acted as a test event for the World Championships. Without that test event, we would not have identified potential challenges,” he said.
According to Mishra, the venue has received a complete refurbishment, including renovations to the walls, restrooms, and flooring, with a team of Malaysian lighting experts enlisted to oversee the installation of the court lighting.
“The most significant change is the complete renovation of the stadium. The walls, restrooms, and floors have all been updated. We’ve even brought in Malaysian lighting experts to manage the lighting. Although there were no significant lighting complaints previously, we’ve sought input from some of the world’s leading experts in this area,” he stated.
“They will set up the entire lighting system, after which the BWF will conduct an inspection and approve it prior to the installation of the final court-specific lighting. Anyone who witnessed or participated in the India Open will find this stadium thoroughly transformed this time around,” Mishra concluded.
