Most users reported the app as “not functioning,” specifically highlighting issues with sending or receiving media.
Several individuals shared their experiences on social media. One Reddit user mentioned that images would get stuck in the chat with a spinning icon, eventually prompting a “retry” message, despite being able to send the same images via other applications.
Another user noted that only recent photos and screenshots were impacted, while older images were sent without any issues. On X, one user shared that they had uninstalled WhatsApp and lost saved files, including stickers, only to later realize the outage was widespread.
Another user initially blamed their Wi-Fi connection before discovering that the issue was with WhatsApp itself.
Live updates from Downdetector indicated that complaints about WhatsApp started to rise in the evening (US time) and continued to affect multiple countries throughout the outage, easing later on Monday, according to the tracking site. Neither Meta nor WhatsApp had released an official statement at that time.
Accounts under review
In a separate incident, WhatsApp placed several user accounts under review for 24 hours, restricting access to certain app features. As reported by PTI, users began flagging this issue around 8 p.m. IST.
Affected accounts displayed a message stating that their activity and device information was being evaluated against WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, with a review requested on 3 August 2026 and results expected within 24 hours. The message also provided links to guidelines on responsible app use and information regarding stolen phones and compromised accounts.
A WhatsApp spokesperson informed PTI that the company continuously strives to prevent misuse of its platform and bans accounts to keep users safe, acknowledging that errors can occur and that they work swiftly to resolve them so users can resume chatting.
Glitch returns
Complaints on Downdetector surged again in the early hours of Tuesday, as users faced another round of difficulties in sending videos and images. On X, several users reported being unable to send or receive pictures and clips for several hours.
In India, complaints peaked at 3:07 a.m., with 53% of users experiencing messaging issues, 36% reporting app-related glitches, and 5% encountering problems with voice calls. Users outside India also confirmed encountering similar issues on X.
